Michurinsky Prospect: A Vibrant Metro Station Design

A Joyful Highlight in Moscow's Suburban Area

The station "Michurinsky Prospect" is a unique and vibrant addition to the Moscow Metro system. Designed by Ludmila Shurygina and Leonid Borzenkov, this three-level semi-underground station stands out with its striking patterns and red color scheme, creating a joyful highlight in the otherwise grey suburban area.

Inspired by the famous Russian biologist Ivan Vladimirovich Michurin, the station's design pays homage to his groundbreaking work in creating unique apple varieties. The pattern on the walls and columns of the station features silhouettes of flowering branches and fruits, symbolizing the abundance in gardens resulting from Michurin's achievements. Additionally, the design draws inspiration from Japanese patterns, adding a touch of elegance and cultural richness to the station.

One of the standout features of Michurinsky Prospect is the use of computer patterns and red color tints throughout the architecture. This deliberate choice creates a cohesive visual experience for passengers, as the patterns accompany them from the entrance to the subway all the way to boarding the train. The station's surfaces are adorned with granite, glazed ceramics, glass, steel, and aluminum, creating a visually stunning environment.

The station's layout consists of three levels. The first level houses the tracks and passenger platform, while the second level features an observation platform. The observation deck, connected to footpaths leading to a nearby park, offers panoramic views of the surrounding area. The third level is dedicated to service and technical premises. Passengers can easily move between the lower two levels using six centrally located escalators.

Michurinsky Prospect's design also incorporates full-height stained glass openings along the western track wall, providing passengers with a panoramic view of the park directly from the platform. The station's facade is adorned with three-meter luminous letters spelling out "Michurinsky Prospect," serving as both the station's name and a nod to the avenue on which it is located.

With a total construction area of 19,913 square meters, Michurinsky Prospect stands as a testament to the designers' creativity and attention to detail. The station's unique design has garnered recognition, including the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category in 2019.

Michurinsky Prospect is not only a functional transportation hub but also a work of art that brings beauty and vibrancy to the everyday lives of commuters. Its innovative design and thoughtful execution make it a standout addition to the Moscow Metro system, showcasing the intersection of art, architecture, and technology.
